Peninsula Tennis Association won their first Wayne Arthurs Cup title on the weekend, defeating the North Eastern Junior Tennis Association at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club. The 10/u event, supported by the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and the Kooyong Foundation saw 40 junior boys and girls representing their Metropolitan Tennis Association or Country Region in the two day event.

In what was a tense grand final, Peninsula TA came out victorious, defeating North Eastern Junior 4 sets, 26 games to 2 sets 25 games.  Peninsula TA’s team, consisting of twins Stami and Zahra Arthur (Mt Martha), Sam Young-Mathers (Mt Martha) and Ava Limpens (Mt Eliza) took out the final marking the first win in the event for the Association. The result was determined by the last match in which Stami Arthur defeated North Eastern Junior TA’s Alexander Scrutton-Brown (Heidelberg) 7-6.

Peninsula TA’s Anne Baldwin was ecstatic with the win and proud of her team saying that ‘the spirit of the team was remarkable, they all toughed it out, showed their determination and fight and never gave up’.

Tournament Director Zoe Plastow said ‘this is a fantastic event. We have players who have travelled from all areas of the state, from as far as Bairnsdale, Wodonga, and Barwon Heads all playing a weekend full of tennis and making new friends for life. The high standard of tennis displayed by these young juniors is wonderful to see’.

The players were also treated with a visit from Wayne Arthurs himself. Wayne assisted with the presentations alongside Terry Fraser, a former President of the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club and Kooyong Foundation, and Maria Keys, Vice President of Tennis Victoria. Wayne added that “It was a great atmosphere at Kooyong with all 40 players competing with terrific sportsmanship and determination. I am very proud to have my name associated with this great event. I believe it is a valuable stepping stone for the u10s to get a taste of competition whilst developing their tennis skills in a team environment.Big thanks to the Kooyong Foundation  for supporting the event and to Tennis Victoria for their organisation”.
