20 June 2012 | Tennis Victoria

As Tennis Victoria’s Championships Dinner on 25 June draws closer, we take a look at the finalists in each category; today, we look at the Most Outstanding Tournament award.

This award, presented by Clark Toop & Taylor, goes to the most innovative and successful tournament during the nomination period (1 May, 2011 to 30 April, 2012). The tournament gained local community engagement and was delivered at the highest possible standard. The team of people behind the tournament were proactive and dedicated to providing a thriving tournament for their players and were rewarded with high levels of participation.

Loy Yang Power Traralgon Tennis International

The Loy Yang Power Traralgon Tennis International was run by the Traralgon Tennis Association from 13-20 January, 2012. The tournament received extensive television, newspaper and radio coverage. The venue has excellent facilities and there were many social events held throughout the tournament, including a welcome reception and dinner for competitors and their families. The tournament received a large amount of support from the local community, with many people coming down to watch the games and getting involved with the social activities. The court surfaces were recently upgraded to ensure the tournament would remain at its existing venue and keep its high standard of play. This tournament is now a Grade 1 ITF Tournament and continues to grow each year.

Tankworld-Rebound Ace Sports VCTA Country Week

Held in Swan Hill in 2012, the Tankworld-Rebound Ace Sports VCTA Country Week tournament regularly receives between 195 and 200 team entries each year. There was extensive media coverage about the event, with television, newspaper and radio all getting involved. The tournament has designated social events every evening, such as an opening ceremony and dinner dance, to allow the players and their families to mingle with other competitors. The local community and local council get very involved in the event, with members of the council opening the competition and attending the social events. This event is considered one of the highlights on the country calendar and hosting the event is highly sought after.

2011 William Loud Bendigo International

The 2011 William Loud Bendigo International was a huge success, receiving large amounts of media exposure both locally and state-wide, with television networks such as WIN getting on board. The tournament also utilised social networking sites as a way of gaining awareness. The YouTube video channel established was particularly successful, receiving over 5000 hits. The amenities and services provided to the competitors were above standard and shuttle services were provided to make it easier for players to get around. The organising committee ensured that there would always be a crowd to play for by inviting local primary schools to bring students to watch matches. The event was able to secure thousands of dollars in sponsorship funding, ensuring it was a great success. This tournament will continue to grow as the number of competitors increases each year.
