As Tennis Victoria’s Championships Dinner on 25 June draws closer, we take a look at the finalists in each category; today, we look at the Most Outstanding 30+ Tennis Senior award.

This award, presented by Signature Sport, recognises an outstanding tennis player who shows skill and dedication to the sport. They have achieved many things on and off the court, playing as part of 35+ senior’s tennis and working towards enhancing seniors’ tennis as well. They have a magnificent attitude towards the game and everyone involved.

Andrew Rae

Andrew Rae has been playing tennis for many years and through his skill and dedication he has accumulated countless achievements. Throughout his singles tennis career, Andrew has had a win-loss record of 429-32. In recent times he has won the International Championships of Germany for Veterans, the Mallorca Seniors Open in Spain and the ITF Super Seniors Von Cramm Cup. Earlier this year, Andrew won the Australian Claycourt Championships at Dendy Park Tennis Club. He is ranked No.2 in the world in the men’s singles 60s age group and No.1 in the men’s 60s doubles age group. Andrew has been a national men’s selector for the past six years and is always looking to expand seniors’ tennis.

Judy Hancy

Representing Australia overseas is just one of Judy Hancy’s many achievements during her tennis career. In 2011 she captained the 65+ world team in Turkey where she won four out of the five singles matches she played. Representing Australia, Judy was selected to play as No.1 and captain the Althea Gibson 70+ team in Umag, Croatia in September this year. Judy has also played in national tournaments around Australia; in 2011 she won the Queensland State Championships in the 65+ ladies’ singles category and in 2012 she represented Tennis Seniors Australia in team events in Perth. On top of all her playing achievements, Judy has been a selector for Tennis Seniors Victoria since 2005 and an Australian selector for Tennis Seniors Australia since 2011. She demonstrates great sportsmanship on and off the court and is always willing to be involved and help out in any way she can.

Terry Smith

Terry Smith has been a member of the tennis community for over 60 years by playing, coaching and helping at his local clubs. He has competed in a number of competitions in the over 35+ category with great results. Terry was a finalist in the men’s singles at the 2012 Australian Tennis Seniors Championship and won the men’s doubles at the same tournament. Other results include reaching the round of 16 in singles and the quarterfinals in doubles at the ITF Super World Seniors Championship and finishing 10th at the ITF Super Seniors Britannia Cup. On top of playing, Terry has coached for many years and recently completed a Court Supervisors officiating course so that he can be of further assistance during tournaments. Terry is well respected by his fellow players and students, has a positive attitude and is always willing to help out where he can.
