Tennis Victoria will be working with Blind Sports Victoria to deliver a six week program to players who are visually impaired.

Starting on Friday, the six week program lasts for two hours and gives all visually impaired people the chance to get active and participate in tennis.

The program uses modified balls and courts to cater for the individual needs of each participant and will be the second of three six week programs held over 2012.

Daniel Piekarski has been involved in the program for a number of years and says it provides a fantastic opportunity for those who are visually impaired to become involved in tennis.

“It’s a great program… it gives you an opportunity to do something you may not have been able to try before,” said Piekarski.

He now hits once a week with a group of three players who have no visual impairment but said it was a challenge to reach that stage.

“It took some time and some private lessons and it took some work,” said Piekarski

“You have to play regularly and the hardest part of the program for me is having a consistent person to hit with each week.”
