9 May 2012 | Tennis Victoria

Cardio Tennis is the latest fitness craze sweeping Australia, and this Thursday 10 May it is Melbourne’s turn to get involved in the tennis workout.

From 12.30 pm at City Square, Cardio Tennis will be on show and the general public are invited to join in the fun for the chance to win a Suunto Heart Rate monitor.

Anyone who visits the exhibition can also register for a free Cardio Tennis workout in their local area.

There will be sport and media personalities hitting the courts to participate in the fitness program suitable for people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities.

Cardio Tennis involves participants wearing heart rate monitors while exercising to music using low-compression balls and a variety of equipment, including agility ladders.

Programs such as Cardio Tennis can lead to an increase in life expectancy according to leading cardiologists.

“People who exercise regularly live longer, have less stroke and cardiovascular disease,” Professor Garry Jennings – Cardiologist and Director of Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, said.

“There are all sorts of physiological benefits [from exercise], which for the most part seem to translate into health benefits and reduction in heart disease,” Professor Jennings added.
