29 April 2015 | Tennis Tasmania

With just a few more sleeps until the Pizzey Cup hits the Domain Tennis Centre in Hobart we look to preview the much anticipated and prestigious teams event where the very best Tasmanian tennis talent is set to battle it out against the rest of Australia as six states and one territory embark on Hobart May 2-10.

Leading from the front will be top ranked female Catherine Krueger. Krueger has recently returned from an extended stint interstate where she posted some impressive results at International Tennis Federation (ITF) events including a doubles title at the Victorian Claycourt International and most recently a quarter final performance at the prestigious Gallipoli Cup in Melbourne. Joining Krueger in the high octane girl’s team will be national academy scholarship holder Sanyukta Singh and great rivals Eliane Fader and Jessica Fowler. The trio of girls have been in hot form with Fader and Singh claiming the Tasmanian State Championships and Fowler reaching the final of the Victorian State lead-in Gold event. Rounding out the team will be much needed experience with Gabrielle Carswell, Hannah Edgell, Erin Fazackerley and Olivia Maskell participating in a previous Pizzey Cup.

On the youthful boy’s line up it will be Daniel Groom looking to provide the spark as he prepares for his third Pizzey Cup campaign. Groom has also been on the mainland for an extended period with some stout results. Most impressively Groom reached the final of the Victorian State Championships whilst also gaining experience at the Royal Park IFT event in Melbourne. Providing experience and poise for Groom will be the big hitting Matthew Harris and Tom Youl whilst the doubles tandem of Remy Lynch and Ben Barnett recently claiming the Tasmanian State Championships and reaching the quarter finals of the Vic State Champs. Rounding out the boy’s squad will be the North-West’s sole participant in Ben Cawston, joined by Mitchell Free and Sam Plunkett-Smith respectively.

There is a buzz around Hobart hosting this years championships and we are very excited to showcase this beautiful city to the rest of Australia. Play gets underway on Sunday 3rd May with the final round robin match Saturday 9th May.
