Sixteen year old tennis player Daniel Groom capped off a successful weekend by taking out the men’s singles title at the Tasmanian Easter championships in Launceston yesterday. Groom is currently on an eight match winning streak after completing the Clarence Open and TTA Easter Championships double.

Groom had an easy straight-sets victory in yesterday’s final, defeating regular finalist Matthew Harris, 6-1, 6-1.

It was Groom’s third title for the tournament after he won the boys’ 16 final on Saturday and added the men’s doubles crown to his singles success yesterday.

In the doubles final, Groom combined with Remy Lynch to defeat Ulverstone’s Benjamin Cawston and Hobart’s Sean Oosthuizen  7-5, 6-2. In a peculiar ending Oosthuizen was called for a foot fault to end the match handing the title to Groom and Lynch.

The boys’ 12 singles final provided a great contest decided over three sets with South Australian Lucas Mascione emerging victorious in a long battle against Thomas Hann, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

The 14 boys’ singles final was another three-hour marathon, with Victorian Lucas Cameron winning 2-6, 6-2, 7-6  against Launceston’s Ruben McCormack.

Launceston’s Lucy Jones and partner Mandy Smith won the women’s doubles final, beating Burnie pair Amanda and Sophie Johnstone  7-5, 6-4.

It was another fabulous event by the hard working Launceston team headlined by tournament director James Bolzonello and referee David Vernon. Our sights now set for Burnie for the Tasmanian State Age Junior Championships before Hobart takes centre stage during the Tasmania State Championships.

We look forward to seeing you shortly!
