17 November 2014 | Tennis Tasmania

After a jam packed day of tennis action the Tasmanian Tennis League is officially in the books. What transpired was outstanding with some incredible play and pressure placed on clubs throughout the day. After all the dust settled it was the Lindisfarne Sharks and Geilston Bay Aces claiming inaugural TTL titles on a warm spring day at the Domain Tennis Centre.

For the Aces it was an inspirational comeback after looking down and out against the highly fancied Launceston Cobras in the final. Both Aces and Cobras earned their place in the final after resounding wins in their semi-finals over the Launceston Rams and Lindisfarne Sharks respectively.

In the high octane final matchup the men’s title came down to the very last match with a doubles match between Tasmanian Tennis Academy directors and Cobra leaders James Bolzonello and Jeff Speer and Aces standouts Tony Blom and Nick Fader. After splitting the two sets the match and title came down to one ten point super tie-break. After falling behind early it was the Aces who claimed the match and title in dramatic fashion, claiming the last four points to initiate wild celebrations in front of a raucous crowd.

In the women’s final the Geilston Bay Aces did the early running before the Lindisfarne Sharks clicked into gear, claiming a comfortable victory and title. The Sharks used a crucial singles win by Jessica Fowler over Olivia Maskell, who battled her heart out to steamroll the Aces claiming the next 3 matches. Lindisfarne Sharks coach John Playle reminisced on the match quoting “After some early pressure from the Aces I was pleased with the team’s composure they showed under pressure with their poise and experience when it mattered. The support shown by club members was fantastic and all teams over the three competitions they gave it their all. A great result for tennis in Tasmania.”

TTL Winners

It’s party mode in Hobart tonight with the Geilston Bay Aces and Lindisfarne Sharks claiming a cool $2,700 winner’s cheque with the Cobras and lady Aces set to rue lost opportunities.

In the 3rd/4th playoff it was the Lindisfarne Sharks who took note from the women, trouncing the Launceston Rams in a confident display of power and aggression. The Sharks used a key win by Chris Schade over Scott Jones to setup the win and in so 3rd place.

Overall the past four weeks has been absolutely outstanding with a perfect conclusion to the Tasmanian Tennis League. This has setup the future of tennis in the state with the reception and interest shown phenomenal.
