Australia opened their bid to reach the Junior Fed Cup by Paribas Finals with a hard-fought win over Kazakhstan on the first day of the Asia / Oceania Final Qualifying event in New Delhi.

With just three places available for September’s final in Hungary, it was imperative that Australia got off to a fast start and Amber Marshall (SA) duly delivered with a comprehensive 6-0 6-1 victory over Takhmina Zhanatova.

Olivia Gadecki (QLD) battled bravely in the second singles rubber, but ultimately suffered defeat in three sets to Anastasia Astakhova. However, Australia secured victory after Marshall and Gadecki fought back from a set down in the doubles to beat their Kazakhstan counterparts 6-7(10) 6-4 10-1.

Next up on day two for Australia are Indonesia, who lost their opening tie 2-1 to Hong Kong.
