Rounds two and three of the 2014 Junior ATL / Angus Thomson Cup were played at the Millswood Tennis Complex yesterday, with Southern Districts Tennis Association and Eastern Districts Tennis Association leading the way in both Men’s and Women’s sides of the competition. In the day’s early action, it was the boys match between Hills Tennis Association and North East Tennis Association, which went right down to the wire. HTA, led by Brandon Wall and Noah Phillips were pushed all the way in their doubles encounter with Blake Lowen and Reece Hemming, winning the deciding rubber 4-3 4-3 to secure the tie for HTA.

In the two other matches on the boys side, SDTA defeated WDTA six rubbers to zero. Josh Laka had a hard fought 4-2 4-3 win over Mitchell Smart in the number one singles match, whilst Harrison Paay and George Curtis put in a strong showing with a 4-1 4-1 win over Nikolai Dobrovolski and Nicholas Brown. Meanwhile EDTA defeated GDTA six rubbers to zero. Jacob Akash and Brad Zidov put up a fight in the doubles, but were unable to defeat a strong EDTA side, eventually going down 4-3 4-0 to Jack Klose and Daniel Radesic.

On the girls side of the draw, it was again the match between NETA and HTA that went the distance. Both Doubles matches went to a super tiebreaks with HTA prevailing in both to take the tie. Ella Vandoleur and Jana Milutinovic were taken all the way by Hayley Edwards and Olivia Hughes, with Ella and Jana winning 3-4 4-2 10-6 to get HTA over the line. Elsewhere, SDTA defeated WDTA six rubbers to zero, but it wasn’t easy for SDTA as Sasha Rankin was pushed all the way by Caitlin Wyatt, eventually winning 4-3 4-2, whilst Jacqui Scott defeated Nicole Swanson 4-3 4-2 to show that WDTA will definitely put up a fight in this competition. EDTA accounted for GDTA six rubbers to love. Alana Repanich was comprehensive with her 4-1 4-0 win, whilst Marsha Zelenskaya won 4-0 4-1, to show that EDTA will be a team to beat in this year’s ATL.

In the afternoon boys matches, NETA and GDTA had a tight match. Dale Nixon from NETA defeated Jacob Akash 3-4 4-3 4-1 in the number one single, whilst Brad Zidov was also pushed all the way by Rowan McCarthur, winning 2-4 4-2 4-3 to give NETA the accendancy as they won the tie four rubbers to two. EDTA were challenged by WDTA. Luka Ilic and Nikolai Dobrovolski had an entertaining three-set match, with Luka prevailing 3-4 4-2 4-2, whilst Jared Waterman was also taken to three sets by Mitchell Smart, eventually taking the rubber 2-4 4-2 4-3 in a tight contest. SDTA continued their good form with a six rubbers to zero win against HTA. SDTA’s Zac Mizgalski was given a fright by HTA’s Jasper Benson, who put in a strong showing to take it to a third set. Zac prevailed 3-4 4-0 4-2 to set SDTA up for a big win. In girls afternoon matches, NETA and GDTA played out an entertaining tie, with NETA winning four rubbers to two. Ella Vandeleur and Jana Milutinovic securing the victory with a 4-2 1-4 10-3 doubles win against Caitlyn Hedger and Jayne Hedger.

EDTA had a six rubbers to zero victory against WDTA with Alana Repanich winning 4-2 4-2, whilst Millie Bird from WDTA pushed Marsha Zelenskaya all the way, but Marsha won a tight match in two tie-break sets 4-3 4-3. SDTA continued their good form from the morning and had a six rubbers to zero win against HTA. Hanna Dawood put in a strong performance to defeat Tayla Day 4-1 4-2, whilst Hanna and teammate Sasha Rankin had a hardfought 4-3 4-3 doubles win.

The JATL now looks forward to rounds four & five being played at the Millswood Tennis Complex on Sunday 23rd November from 9.00am.
