Round one of the 2014 Junior ATL / Angus Thomson Cup was played at Millswood Tennis Complex Yesterday with reigning Boys & Girls champions Eastern Districts Tennis Association asserting their strength on the competition with resounding wins over Strong Hills Tennis Association sides.

The Boys, led by Jack Klose won two of the four singles matches against the Hills taking it to the doubles to decide the outcome of the rubber. EDTA were pushed by the Hills in the doubles only getting over the line with two super tie break wins in the third.

In other Boys matches SDTA defeated NETA six rubbers to zero. At number one single Josh Laka from SDTA held off a fighting Dale Nixon 4-3 4-3 while SDTA’s Harrison Paay made a strong JATL debut with a 4-0 4-1 win over Devon Reid.

GDTA entered the competition with a new found confidence defeating WDTA in a close fought battle which was decided by only two sets. GDTA’s number one Jacob Akash won in straight sets against WDTA’s Mitchell Smart 4-2 4-1 while WDTA’s Harrison Patton followed winning against GDTA’s Alex Haskell 4-2 4-2 to keep the team in contention.

In the Girls competition 2013 JATL Champions EDTA led the Hills Team five Rubbers to zero with the match of the round between EDTA’s Natasha Waterman & Jieyi Chen who took on Hayley Edwards & Tayla Day from the Hills going down to the wire with the Hills prevailing 1-4 4-3 4-3.

In the second Girls match the top rated SDTA team were on cue against NETA. At number one singles SDTA’s Emilia Bowell overcame Ella Vandeleur in two sets while Bowell’s teammate Jacqui Scott finished strongly to beat NETA’s youngster Michicko Trebilco 4-2 4-3.

WDTA’s girls came out with a strong start leading three rubbers to zero. GDTA’s Danielle Quinlan kept her team in the match winning 4-2 4-2 against WDTA’s Mikaela Pionilla. WDTA was able to hold off a fighting GDTA team with one win out of the two doubles rubbers with WDTA’s Nicole Swanson & Mikaela Pionilla defeating Danielle Quinlan & Jorgia Inglis in a third set super tie-break 3-4 4-3 10-8.

The JATL now looks forward to round two & three played at the Millswood Tennis Complex on Sunday 9 November from 9.00am.
