Tennis Queensland

National Academy

INTRODUCTION

The National Academy – Brisbane is a high performance training environment that provides qualifying athletes the necessary training and development opportunities that an elite athlete requires.  The NA caters primarily for athletes aged between 10 years and 16 years old who have met rigorous entrance criteria.

The National Academy is only possible through the partnership between Tennis Australia, Tennis Queensland and the Queensland Academy of Sport.  The three bodies play a major role in the provision of staff, facilities and support services.

CRITERIA UPDATE – as of January 2012 The National Academy Brisbane has made some changes to the scholarship levels to fall in line with the other National Academies around Australia.  From this point forward, the following scholarship levels will be offered:

  • Full Scholarship (as per the Tennis Australia Athlete Development Criteria)
  • Wild Card Scholarship (at the discretion of the Head Coach)
  • ATP/WTA Athletes (at the discretion of the Head Coach)

Athletes who are current Associate Scholarship Holders (with a signed Athlete Agreement) will continue to have access to the NA services until the conclusion of their current scholarship period.  The Associate Scholarship Criteria for Queensland no longer exists and has been replaced by the Wild Card Scholarship Level.

NA REGIONAL ATHLETE ASSISTANCE

With the National Academy – Brisbane based in Brisbane at the Queensland Tennis Centre, Tennis Queensland recognise the difficulties that exist for regionally based athletes wishing to access the services of the NA.

With this in mind, Tennis Queensland has offers a “Regional Assistance” program that financially assists athletes who meet the Athlete Development Criteria (Full/Wild Card) but do not have the opportunity to access the NA on a weekly basis due to their geographical isolation.

For further information about the “Regional Assistance Program”, please contact Tennis Queensland.

 MAL ANDERSON JUNIOR TENNIS FOUNDATION

The Mal Anderson Junior Tennis Foundation (MAJTF) has made available funds to assist with travel to interstate National Championships for players residing outside of the Brisbane area.  Athletes who meet the criteria are eligible for $100 in assistance for each interstate National’s that they attend.  Click here for the Mal Anderson Tour Assistance Form.

PATHWAY

The NA program forms a key part of the Tennis Australia development pathway.  The next step in the national pathway is for an athlete to transition in to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) program.  The AIS is the finishing school which readies athletes for the professional tours.
