Anastasia Rodionova hovered outside the top 100 throughout 2009, enjoying some solid results on the WTA Tour and winning back-to-back ITF events in Bundaberg and Ipswich. Her doubles performances were even more pleasing, winning main-draw matches at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon, and reaching the quarterfinals at Indian Wells. Born in Tabov, Russia to a professional tennis coach, Ivan, and homemaker, Natalia, Rodionova has one sister, Arina (also a tennis pro) and began representing Australia in 2008. She learned to play tennis aged seven, taught by Ivan. “His dream for me was to beat him and I finally did that when I was 14.” As a child, Anastasia performed gymnastics and although she doesn’t have time for other sports now, she does enjoy swimming. Her 2003 Wimbledon Mixed Doubles final with Andy Ram was her most memorable tennis moment. When she’s not playing, she enjoys reading books, watching movies and going out to nightclubs. Anastasia appreciates the opportunities she has been given saying, “It’s possible for us to have the social and cultural experiences of many lifetimes, all packed into a relatively short space of time.” She finds travelling around the world “gruelling”, but loves meeting people from different cultures. Her father has had the most significant influence on Anastasia’s career. “I know almost everything that has made me become a successful player through his teaching and guidance,” she says. She believes her emotions are both her strength and her weakness, helping her to fight but sometimes causing her to lose concentration.
