Chris Guccione broke back into top 100 singles rankings after reaching his second career ATP Tour final in Sydney in January, defeating Lleyton Hewitt, Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek en route. He made his Olympic debut in Beijing in August and one of the highlights of his season was an epic three hour, three set, first round doubles victory (w/Hewitt) over Agustin Santiago Calleri and Juan Monaco, 18-16 in the final set. Nicknamed “Gucc” (pronounced Gooch), Chris’s proudest moment was winning the fifth rubber in Australia’s 2006 Davis Cup tie against Switzerland in Geneva. A mad Geelong Cats supporter, if he could come back in a second life Chris would like to be an AFL player. His ideal holiday destination is a tropical beach. His favourite band is U2, his favourite actor is Adam Sandler and his sporting idols are Pete Sampras and Tiger Woods. Chris’s tennis-playing parents, Santo and Dianne, introduced him to the game aged 10 and he and his brother took it up because they enjoyed the competition. Chris credits his family as his inspiration saying: “They have all been super supportive over the last 10 years. Anything I needed – they always tried their best to help out”.
