Samantha Stosur started playing tennis aged eight when a friend gave her a racquet for Christmas. She practiced with her brother, Daniel, at their local courts. Realising that she had talent, he convinced their parents, Dianne and Tony, to pay for coaching. She went on her first tour aged 13, competing in the World Youth Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia. At 16 she joined the Australian Institute of Sport. Sam’s career break came at Australian Open 2006 when she reached the fourth round. An accomplished doubles player, she reached the No.1 ranking in doubles in February 2006 having claimed a series of titles with Lisa Raymond. In July 2007, Sam contracted Lyme disease and, having spent 61-consecutive weeks ranked as the No.1 doubles player in the world, was forced to withdraw from her remaining tournaments for the season. She rejoined the WTA Tour in June 2008, and in singles she marked her return to top-level tennis with a stirring run to the French Open semifinals. This catapulted her into the world’s top 20 for the first time in her career, and proved she had the mentality to match her raw talent. Stosur’s other singles highlights in 2009 included reaching the quarterfinals at the Miami event - during which she defeated Dinara Safina and Amelie Mauresmo – and recording her best ever performance at Wimbledon with a trip to the third round. She recorded an impressive season in doubles with permanent partner Rennae Stubbs – including an appearance in the Wimbledon final – and went undefeated in Fed Cup play, winning four singles rubbers and one doubles rubber. Sam’s motto is: “Give 100 per cent. Get better. As long as you are improving and getting better that’s all you can ask for,” she says. Her sporting hero is surfer, Layne Beachley and when she’s not playing tennis, Sam enjoys spending time at the beach and relaxing. Her favourite sports team is the Gold Coast Titans.
