Principal sponsor Power and Water combined with co-sponsor Darwin City Council, plus a number of minor sponsors to host the last ITF Junior Circuit tournaments to be conducted in the NT. 2009 heralded the end of an era for the two tournaments.

Introducing an ITF Junior Circuit tournament to Darwin in 1990 was the brain-child of a former Vice-President of Tennis NT and President of the Darwin Tennis Association, Mr Horry Kneebone (now deceased). His inspiration in establishing a Grade 5 ITF Junior Circuit tournament through direct contact to the ITF eventually transitioned to two Grade 3 tournaments. Horry would have been pleased with this result.

Many, many people along the way contributed to the success and evolution of the tournaments. In the early days, the single tournament struggled, but with persistence and dedication of volunteers, it eventually grew in status and popularity and achieved Grade 3 status with an added back-to-back tournament. Various marketing tools were used over the years to achieve this result.

In 2001, Tennis Australia came to the assistance of Tennis NT by providing a Tournament Director from their staff. This was in response to the growth of the tournaments and a tightening of the rules and regulations by the ITF. Thus began the partnership between Tennis Australia and Tennis NT which continued until the final tournaments in 2009.
