Last weekend, Cessnock Tennis Club, proudly hosted the 10/U state teams championships. John Whittaker and Dorn Fogarty were honoured in 1994 by Tennis NSW, by naming each title after their individual achievements in tennis.
The prestigious championships, is an invitation only event. The selection panel includes staff from Tennis NSW as well as team ambassadors Brian Armstrong and Carol Langsford.
The weekend proved to be another success, with the weather looking uneasy on Saturday afternoon, all participants soldiered on, supporting their teams in the early rounds.
The boys teams, Metropolitan Slices and Metropolitan Serves, were too strong, both making it to the final on Sunday undefeated. The John Whittaker Cup was up for grabs, with the Slices and Serves both equal favourites to take the title.
The Metropolitan Slices took the advantage early by jumping to a 3 sets to love lead, however later on the Serves, fought back and took a set off the Slices.
The Serves left their run a little too late with the Metropolitan Slices taking the title 4-2. Managed by Bruce Burns, a seasoned professional on the teams’ event calendar, Bruce has now managed two winning teams in 2012.
The Dorn Fogarty Cup was a tight battle with all girls competing to the best of their abilities. Metropolitan Slices were undefeated going into the final against Central West. Central West’s road to the final was tougher, narrowly defeating Metro Aces by one game.
The girls final was a seesaw event, with all matches going down to the wire. The final doubles match on centre court was the decider, with Metropolitan Slices taking home the title, defeating Central West by two games.
John Whittaker travelled to Cessnock on Sunday to present the winning teams their medals and the perpetual trophies.
