State Final to put tennis on Central West map

25 July 2012 | Briony Craber

Tennis NSW today announced that Nepean District Tennis Association (NDTA) and Hawkesbury District Tennis Association (HDTA) will host the Medibank Junior Development Series (MJDS) State Final from Saturday 27 to Monday 29 October 2012.

The MJDS State Final is the most prestigious junior tournament in NSW. This year is the first time that the event will be played on the Tennis Australia’s national round robin format. The round robin format guarantees players a minimum of 3 matches, which is important for development and confidence.

Participation into the round robin event is invitation only. Players from 10/U, 12/U, 14/U and 16/U compete throughout the year in the MJDS; they then qualify for their regional Champion of Champions event. From that event the top 3 country and top 6 metropolitan players, as well as a couple of wildcards, are invited to compete in the State Final.

Over 500 athletes and their families will descend on the Central West tennis region. Local businesses are expected to flourish with the increase in tourism from all NSW regions. The State Final will also be hosting a number of demonstrations from Tennis Australia’s kids’ starter program, MLC Tennis Hot Shots and new fitness based program, Cardio Tennis.

Tennis NSW Tournaments and Competitions Manager, Nicole Bouffler, believes that the location of both the Nepean and Hawkesbury courts will provide all age groups the equal opportunity to shine over the tournament.

“The advantage of both locations having 14 courts allows us to replicate the same experience for all athletes”.

NDTA CEO, Chris Woodland, was thrilled when he received the call from the Tennis NSW Tournaments and Competitions team.

“We are excited to be working with Tennis NSW on providing our junior players with an outstanding quality tournament. This event will put the Central West region on the tennis map”.
