Asia-Pacific Tennis League comes to NSW/ACT

29 June 2012 | Jackson Hills

The Asia-Pacific Tennis League (ATL) is a league for professional and semi-professional tennis players across Australia and reaching into the Asia-Pacific region. The league was piloted in 2011 and conducted in South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. In 2012, the league is expanding and will include a combined conference in New South Wales and ACT.

More information on the ATL will be released over the coming weeks. But for now, interested players and clubs should note as follows –

  • Five Australian conferences will be held during November 2012 to identify the winners who will play at the 2013 Australian Open
  • ATL Final matches will be hosted at Melbourne Park during the Australian Open (Dates TBC). Teams from New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and China will also be invited to compete in the Final
  • A minimum of 4 players (both male and female) are required for each match. Team’s must be made up of a minimum of 8 players in a squad plus a coach.
  • An innovative format will be adopted for matches with the aim for match to finish within 3 hours
  • The 5 Australian Conferences will consist of a combination of player payment subsidies and prize money
  • The player payment subsidy will depend upon the number the player plays in the line-up and whether he or she wins the match. It is expected that clubs / teams contribute on top of this player subsidy
  • The total player payment subsidy per conference (across men and women) is $39,200
  • The prize money for the winning men’s and women’s team in each conference is $4,000 with the runner-up teams receiving $1,000

The ATL is an exciting competition and offers players an opportunity to earn some additional prize-money whilst competing in a high energy and competitive format. The competition is seen as Tennis’ response to other modified formats of organised sport. In 2011, many professional Australian players got behind the league and we hope that the same will apply in NSW/ACT in 2012.
