Last weekend the 2012 Medibank Junior Development Series (MJDS) got underway at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, Parramatta and Macquarie. The MJDS, now a national pathway for junior tennis, has announced that No.1 Australian ranked player, Bernard Tomic, will be the ambassador for the program.
Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre hosted the 10/U and 14/U boys and girls on Sunday. The 10/u had an experience of a lifetime, watching up and coming Australian, Ashleigh Barty, win her first Pro Tour title at the Nature’s Way Sydney International. Watching her win her first professional tour title inspired the kids to play well throughout the round robin event.
The competition was tough with all four No. 1 seeded juniors playing extremely well throughout their matches. 10/U boy, Spencer Reynolds, only lost one game out of five matches. Reynolds, who won 2011 10/U Medibank State Series title, looks to be the one to beat in his age group.
Caitlyn Portela, the No. 1 seed for the 10/U girls, dominated her group by winning three of her matches 9-1 and her final match 10-0. Portela’s form looks solid, last year she played an integral part in winning the 10/U Medibank State Teams Championships in Cessnock.
Corey Gaal and Shubhika Dubey both provided stand out performances in the 14/U boys and girls groups winning all four matches convincingly. Parramatta hosted the 12/U age groups and Macquarie hosted the 16/U which again provided competition for those older age groups.
”MJDS is a great pathway for juniors looking to get their start in NSW tournaments. The round robin format allows new kids to gain confidence throughout their matches by playing a number of experienced juniors” explained MJDS Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre Tournament Director, Susan Harris.
