Last night NSW athlete, Kelly Wren, took home the NSW Sports Federation Athlete with a Disability award.

Kelly, Australia’s number 1 ranked female athlete with a disability was completely surprised when her name was called up to the winner’s podium. This was no surprise to the team at Tennis NSW, her incredible achievements include; undefeated in international competition for 11 years, dominating the field at the INAS Global Games in Italy winning singles, doubles, mixed doubles and ladies team events.

The list does not stop there. At the Special Olympics she took home singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles. Kelly capped off 2011, winning the Newcombe Medal, Tennis Australia Awards, Athlete with a Disability.

“Wow this is just incredible, especially up against someone like Kurt (Fearnley OAM), he’s so well known. This has topped off an extraordinary couple of months, if you keep active and enjoy what you do, good things will come” explained a delighted Kelly.

“The team at Tennis NSW is thrilled that Kelly has been recognised by the NSW Sports Federation. With an achievement list like hers it is hard to overlook” said Programs Manager Michelle Clarke.

Kelly now coaches autistic children one day a week in Sydney’s south, calling it “challenging”. She hopes to pass on her passion for the game to other children and adults with a disability.

Congratulations Kelly!
