Pascoe captures Austria Cup for Australia

Tennis NSW Director, Wayne Pascoe, along with team mates Glenn Busby and Gary Thoroughgood have captured the ITF Seniors Championships Austria Cup 55+ over the weekend in San Diego. The men have started their year off with a bang, Busby taking the 55+ men’s singles title at Australian Tennis Seniors Championships in Perth beating his team mate Thoroughgood 6-3 6-2.

Busby and Thoroughgood ranked men’s 55+ number one and two as well as Pascoe ranked number 21 made up the formidible team. Australia had a weight of expectations on their shoulders, already winning the title for the last seven years in a row.

Placed in Group A with Germany and Switzerland, Australia dominated the field winning 6-0 matches and taking the all important 2 points in their group.

Meeting United States of America in the final Australia had a tough task ahead of them. Pascoe gave the team the lead in the final, battling out a win against Sal Castillo 2-6 6-3 6-0.

World number one, Gary Busby, then had a suprising loss to Dan Waldman, 4-6 7-6 (5) which meant that the doubles match would decide the winner of the Austria Cup.

Busby partnered up with Gary Thoroughgood to take on Ross Pearsons and Dan Waldman. It was a tight first set going to a tiebreak, with the Aussies pushing out a win 7-6 (4). The Aussies gained confidence from the first set and won the second set 6-4. Australia has now won the Austria Cup a record eight years in a row.

Congratulations also goes to Brenda Forster and Leanne Swaysland both from NSW as well as Ros Balodis who have captured the Maria Esther Bueno Cup 50+ women. Australia also beat the United States of America in the deciding doubles match 6-1 6-2.
