State Academy athlete, David Kohan partnered up with Chun Hun Wong of Hong Kong to win his first ITF doubles title in New Zealand today.
Kohan and Wong, seeded 5th, had a tough beginning to the title beating Australian pair Brian Tran and Marc Polmans in the first round 6-4 6-7 (4) [10-5]. After finding their rhythm as doubles partners they then went on to blast the New Zealand doubles pair 6-0 6-1 in the second round.
David and Chun met unseeded Japanese pair Ketio Iijma and Kenta Miyoshi in the final. Iijma and Miyoshi played extremely well to make it into the final after beating the number 2 seeded team in the semi-finals 7-6 (3) 6-3.
The first set was a great display of doubles tennis with Kohan and Wong working well to win the set 6-3. To the Japanese doubles team credit, they worked hard to get back into the match in the second set but at the crucial stages were unable to answer the questions asked by Kohan and Wong. The final result was 6-3 7-5.
“This win is a great reward for David for all the effort he is been applying for the last 6 months. Whilst a lot of players take time off over Christmas and New Year, David trained hard 6 days per week including Christmas Day which included on court, gym sessions, cross training, kayaking, sand sprints and hills sprints.”
“David deserves a lot of the credit, however his Exercise Physiologist Matt Said put together a great program which has helped David go to a new level” explained David’s coach, Darren Moore.
David will now make the trip back to Sydney and continue to train hard in preparation for the Australian ITF’s which will begin in April.
