Clare Valley, Clare SA, Australia, 5 March 2017 | David Packman

Top seed Beatriz Haddad Maia has taken out the Clare Valley Tennis International on Sunday with a straight sets victory over rising Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova.

“It was a great week, I think I was improving each match,” the Brazilian world No.178 said. “I lost against (Vondrousova) two weeks ago, so I am very happy.”

The match began evenly but once play settled it was the 20-year-old from Sao Paulo who exerted control, eventually claiming her seventh ITF title 6-2 6-2 in just 57 minutes.

Haddad Maia was also responsible for eliminating the best-performed Australian in Clare Valley when she rallied from a set behind to oust No.8 seed Destanee Aiava 3-6 6-1 7-5 in their semifinal encounter, thus denying the Melbourne teenager an opportunity for consecutive Australian Pro Tour titles after her maiden success in Perth last week.

The singles title capped off an impressive week for Haddad Maia in South Australia, after already winning the doubles on Friday with Australian Genevieve Lorbergs. In their first outing together – after connecting on Facebook prior to the event – the pair came through qualifying before eventually defeating third seeds Erika Sema of Japan and Canberra’s Alison Bai, winning 6-4 6-3.
