Perth WA, Australia, 26 February 2017 | David Packman

Victorian teenager Destanee Aiava has taken out her maiden Australian Pro Tour title, winning the Perth Tennis International #2 on Sunday.

The rising star powered to victory in her third ITF Circuit final, defeating Slovakian fourth seed Viktoria Kuzmova 6-1 6-1 in under an hour.

“Third time lucky,” she said. “It’s a pretty good feeling to finally get one.”

Facing only one break point for the match and creating 14 opportunities of her own, it was a clinical display from Aiava in the Perth heat, as the world No.252 took control early over her higher-ranked opponent and never relinquished her dominance.

“I stepped onto the court and I really wanted it,” she said. “I just tried to play my game, do as best as I could, and see where that took me.”

The Perth ITF $25,000 title caps off  a dream start to the year for Aiava, 16, after making her Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in January and qualifying for the Brisbane International where her first round win over American Bethanie Mattek-Sands made her the first player born after the year 2000 to win a WTA main draw match.

“I will just continue to keep working hard and building in my confidence,” Aiava said as she now makes her way to South Australia for the Clare Valley Tennis International.
