Elina Svitolina has beaten Daria Gavrilova to advance to the semifinals of the China Open.

Svitolina has lost her last three meetings with the Australian – all in 2016, and including their Hopman Cup match – but turned the tables with a 7-6(3) 6-1 win on Friday.

Gavrilova had beaten Christina McHale, Timea Bacsinszky and Caroline Garcia to progress to the last eight in Beijing, but found the Ukrainian too strong.

Gavrilova saved six set points in the opening set but eventually fell away after Svitolina finally clinched it.

Svitolina plays No.3 seed Agnieszka Radwanska in the semis.
