Australian Daria Gavrilova has staged an impressive comeback to book her spot in the third round of the China Open.

Gavrilova upended No.12 seed Timea Bacsinszky 4-6 6-0 6-4 in two hours, 21 minutes.

Awaiting her in the last 16 will be the winner of the match between France’s Caroline Garcia and China’s Peng Shuai.

Bacsinszky, a former top 10 player who reached the China Open final in 2015, is currently ranked 15th – she is Gavrilova’s highest-ranked scalp since then No.5 Simona Halep in May (Rome).

Earlier on Wednesday, Bernard Tomic was brushed aside in the opening round of the concurrent ATP event, going down to Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets.

The Australian world No.22, who went into the match favoured over the No.38, was dispatched in just 48 minutes, going down 6-3 6-1.
