Olympics: Stosur through to round two
Sam Stosur has set up a second-round meeting with Misaki Doi at the Rio Olympics after toughing out a win over Latvian youngster Jelena Ostapenko.
Sam Stosur has overcome the stiff challenge of Jelena Ostapenko to advance to the second round of the women’s singles in Rio.
Stosur beat the Latvian teen 1-6 6-3 6-2 on Tuesday.
The win sets up a second-round meeting with Japanese lefty Misaki Doi, who beat Wimbledon quarterfinalist Yaroslava Shvedova.
Stosur beat Doi just a few months ago in the opening round at Roland Garros and leads their head-to-head series 3-0.
Fellow Aussie Daria Gavrilova was unable to join Stosur in round two, falling to the mighty world No.1 Serena Williams.
Gavrilova went down 6-4 6-2, but did come out on top of this spectacular rally on Centre Court at the Olympic tennis venue.
