After almost three hours, Daria Gavrilova saw off Frenchwoman Alize Cornet to take her place in the second round of the Kremlin Cup.

Gavrilova recovered to win 3-6 6-3 7-5, overcoming five double faults to seal victory in two hours and 52 minutes.

The Moscow-born Australian resident will next take on third seed Flavia Pennetta, who received an opening-round bye.

Pennetta will come into the contest with plenty of motivation; she is one of five women vying for the three remaining berths at next week’s WTA Finals in Singapore.

Gavrilova and Pennetta will go head to head on Wednesday in Moscow.
