Australia’s John-Patrick Smith has moved through to the second round of US Open qualifying with a straight-sets win over American Jesse Witten.

Smith wrapped up a 7-6(5) 6-1 victory to set up a meeting with Frenchman Vincent Millot.

He joins compatriot Matt Ebden in the second round; Ebden will face another American in Dennis Novikov.

The news was not so good for fellow Aussies Jason Kubler, Luke Saville and Anastasia Rodionova – the trio all fell at the first hurdle of qualifying on Wednesday.

Saville pushed Karen Khachanov to three sets, while Kubler and Rodionova went down in straight sets.
