Update 3.30am: Casey Dellacqua has picked up right where she left off in Birmingham, storming to a straight-sets first-round win on Monday at the AEGON Classic.

Dellacqua beat American Lauren Davis 6-4 6-1 in just one hour and seven minutes.

The victory sets up a likely second-round meeting with 15th seed Jelena Jankovic, provided the Serb gets past Czech Tereza Smitkova.

Last year in Birmingham – a WTA Premier event – Dellacqua progressed to the semifinals, the best result of her singles career.

Unfortunately, compatriot Ajla Tomljanovic was unable to join her in the second round, after falling 6-3 6-4 to British wildcard Naomi Broady.

Later in the day, another Aussie, Jarmila Gajdosova, also fell, suffering a 6-1 6-3 defeat to another local wildcard in Johanna Konta.

Konta is in good form on the lawns after having reached the quarterfinals at last week’s WTA event in Nottingham, and showed more of that good touch in Monday’s 58-minute victory over Gajdosova.
