Daria Gavrilova has given third seed Simona Halep a fright before succumbing in three at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Gavrilova battled for nearly two hours before going down 2-6 6-1 6-2.

The Russian-born Australian had qualified for the main draw and then defeated Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa in the opening round.

In a scratchy match, Gavrilova and Halep combined for 16 double faults and 80 unforced errors – while only managing a collective 33 winners – before the Romanian secured her place in the last 32.

Another Aussie qualifier, Alex Bolt, fell 6-4 6-2 to Dutchman Robin Haase.

Although Bolt managed to gain four break point opportunities, he was unable to covert one, helping Haase to victory in one hour and seven minutes.

Nick Kyrgios plays later on Friday night (Pacific Time) at Indian Wells’ Stadium 1.
