Bernard Tomic has come through a tough match to advance to the second round of the ATP hardcourt event in Acapulco.

Tomic, currently ranked 42nd, recovered to beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 3-6 6-4 6-4.

The victory, achieved in one hour and 35 minutes, sets up a second-round meeting with eighth seed Benjamin Becker of Germany.

Tomic joins compatriot Marinko Matosevic in the last 16, who yesterday advanced with a straight-sets win.

Qualifier Thanasi Kokkinakis and world No.69 Sam Groth were unable to join them, falling in their first-round matches on Monday.

Aussie women fall

Earlier in Acapulco, No.10 seed Ajla Tomljanovic fell in straight sets to Magdalena Rybarikova.

The Brisbane-based Tomljanovic was on the back foot as Rybarikova slammed four aces; the Slovak sealed a 6-3 6-4 win in one hour and 11 minutes.

Across the globe in Doha, Daria Gavrilova’s run came to an end; having won three matches to qualify, the 20-year-old lost 6-4 5-7 6-4 to Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.
