An 11-strong Australian contingent will take to the hard courts of Flushing Meadows this week in a bid to qualify for the US Open.

Flying the Australian flag in the men’s draw are James Duckworth, John-Patrick Smith, Thanasi Kokkinakis, Alex Bolt, Ben Mitchell and Matt Reid.

Duckworth successfully qualified at Wimbledon, and will be hoping to repeat the feat in New York; he opens against Frenchman Axel Michon.

Smith faces Ecuador’s Emilio Gomez in his first round match, while Kokkinakis takes on Croat Nikola Mektic, with a tricky second round battle potentially looming against No.5 seed Horacio Zeballos.

There are also tough draws for Bolt and Reid – South Australian Bolt finds himself up against fourth-seeded Facundo Bagnis of Argentina while Reid will battle No.9 seed Peter Gojowczyk of Germany.

In the women’s qualifying draw, Olivia Rogowska leads the Aussie charge as the No.6 seed.

She takes on Germany’s Kristina Barrois in her first rounder, hoping to carry on the form that has seen her rise to the cusp of the top 100 and win the recent $50,000 ITF event on hard courts in Sacramento.

She’ll be joined in the draw by compatriots Ash Barty – who takes on Thai Noppawan Lertcheewakarn in her opening match – and Rodionova sisters Anastasia and Arina, who tackle Indy De Vroom and 31st seed Sachia Vickery respectively.

Russian-born Daria Gavrilova will also represent Ausralia; she has drawn Slovene Tadeja Majeric first up.
