Sam Stosur is headed to next week’s WTA Connecticut Open after scoring a wildcard into the main draw.

She joins fellow Aussie Casey Dellacqua at the WTA Premier-level event, held at Yale in New Haven.

World No.22 Stosur joins a field headed by defending champion and world No.2 Simona Halep, reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, world No.7 Eugenie Bouchard and former world No.1 and four-time New Haven winner Caroline Wozniacki.

Also scoring wildcards were Dominika Cibulkova, Andrea Petkovic and Kirsten Flipkens.

Stosur has contested the New Haven event on six previous occasions but not since 2010, when she reached the quarterfinals. She advanced to the semifinals in 2006.

The Australian is looking to gain valuable match practice ahead of the US Open, beginning 25 August in New York.

She was unfortunate during her US Open lead-up to run into Serena Williams two weeks running in Montreal and Cincinnati, with the World No.1 ending her campaigns at the two Premier events in the second round.

Her only other hardcourt match came in Stanford, where she lost in the first round to Japan’s Naomi Osaka.
