Marinko Matosevic has scored a lucky loser entry into the main draw of the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain.

On a day when both he and compatriot Bernard Tomic fell in their final round qualifying matches, Matosevic’s Sunday took a more positive turn when it turned out he would replace the injured Novak Djokovic in the main draw of the ATP Masters 1000 event.

Matosevic joins fellow Aussies Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Stosur in the field at the combined ATP-WTA claycourt event.

The trio will all be in action at La Caja Magica on Monday; Matosevic takes on German Philipp Kohlschreiber while Hewitt tackles qualifier Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. Stosur faces a tough battle with in-form ninth seed Dominika Cibulkova.

Despite Tomic’s 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4 loss in Madrid qualifying to German Benjamin Becker, it was an encouraging return to the courts for the 21-year-old.

On Friday won his first tour-level match since January with a straight-sets defeat of Michael Llodra.
