The Australian girls’ World Junior Tennis team has qualified for the World Junior Tennis finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic in August after finishing third at the Asia/Oceania qualifying event in New Delhi at the weekend.

Australia defeated Uzbekistan 3-0, Turkmenistan 3-0 and Kazakhstan 3-0 without dropping a set in Group A of the round robin phase, then defeated Japan 2-0 (doubles not played), lost to China 1-2, and defeated India 2-0 (doubles not played) in the play-off for first to eighth places places.

The team comprised Destanee Aiava (Vic), Jeanette Lin (SA) and Selina Turlja (SA), under the guidance of coach Craig Tyzzer.

Australia finished behind Chinese Taipei and China in the final standings.

The finals will be held 4-9 August 2014.

Meanwhile, the Australian World Junior Tennis boys’ team finished seventh in New Delhi.

The team defeated Turkmenistan 3-0, Uzbekistan 3-0 and Indonesia 3-0 to advance to the play-offs for places first to eighth, then lost 2-0 to Thailand, 2-1 to India and defeated Indonesia 2-0 to finish seventh.

The boys’ team comprised Codey Gunn (Vic), Stefan Norodom (SA) and Greg Polmans (Vic), and was coached by Mark Hlawaty.
