Sam Stosur has begun her WTA Tournament of Champions campaign in style with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Elena Vesnina in Sofia.

The Australian world No.19 needed just 75 minutes to level her career head-to-head with the Russian at 2-2.

The win puts Stosur alongside Serbian Ana Ivanovic – whom she next faces – atop their group in the round-robin competition.

“I’m very happy with my first win here in Sofia,” Stosur said.

“In the beginning of the second set Elena began to play with more confidence and I’m satisfied because I didn’t let her back into the match.”

After a lengthy stretch to complete the opening two games of the match, Stosur made light work of her opponent to take the first set.

Vesnina broke early for a 3-0 lead in the second set before Stosur stormed back to win six straight games to take the match.
