Australian tennis star Sam Stosur has drawn a qualifier in the first round of the US Open in New York.

Bidding for a second title at Flushing Meadows after beating Serena Williams in the 2011 final, 11th-seeded Stosur has landed in the same quarter of the draw as second-seeded Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka.

Australian teenager Ash Barty takes on Spaniard Estrella Cabeza Candela.

In the men’s event, Bernard Tomic faces Spaniard Albert Ramos in the first round, while Lleyton Hewitt plays American Brian Baker for a likely second-round shot at 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro.

Marinko Matosevic meets Spanish 19th seed Tommy Robredo and Australian wildcard James Duckworth makes his US Open main-draw debut against American Tim Smyzcek.

Four more Australians – Nick Kyrgios, Anastasia Rodionova, Casey Dellacqua and Olivia Rogowska – remain alive in the men’s and women’s qualifying event.

The final Grand Slam event of the year gets underway on Monday.
