Bernard Tomic has cruised into the second round of the joint ATP/WTA event in Indian Wells, dismissing Thomaz Bellucci in just over an hour.

Tomic beat the Brazilian 6-4 6-3 to set up a second round clash with No.10 seed Richard Gasquet.

A much-discussed element in Tomic’s stellar form in 2013 has been his improved serve.

And it was on display against the 38th-ranked Bellucci – the Australian clubbed five aces, won 80 per cent of points on his first serve and an impressive 86 on his second delivery, and saved both break points he faced.

The win takes the 20-year-old Tomic’s 2013 record to a sparkling 10-4.

Tomic’s compatriot Lleyton Hewitt is in action later on Thursday in Indian Wells against Lukas Rosol on the 16,000 seat Stadium 1.
