Australian wildcard Jarmila Gajdosova is through to the second round of the Hobart International after downing Italian Romina Oprandi in straight sets.

Gajdosova, who claimed her sole WTA title in the Tasmanian capital two years ago, won 6-4 7-5 to book a date with Belarusian Olga Govortsova.

After a difficult 12 months in which she slipped from a ranking of No.33 in the world – she’s currently No.167 – Gajdosova was just glad to have some success.

Asked the best thing about the victory she quipped: “That I won, really.”

“Overall I think I played a pretty decent match. There were a few errors but I managed to get out of it and still win in straight sets.

“It’s the win that counts. I think I’m slowly getting better. It was the first match but I hope there are many more to come.

“I would like to be better than I was (last year).”

Exciting teenage prospect Ashleigh Barty will be hoping to follow her compatriot into the second round when she opens her campaign later against Mona Barthel.

Barty is full of confidence after rounding out her Hopman Cup with a 6-0 6-3 thrashing of former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone.

Fellow Australian wildcard Bojana Bobusic is also in action on Monday.

The Australian Open wildcard playoff winner takes on American Lauren Davis.
