Sydney, 3 March 2011 |

Fourteen-year-old Ashleigh Barty (Springfield, Qld) will compete in her second quarterfinal in as many weeks following an exciting second round victory at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis International.

After reaching the final eight in last week’s Mildura Grand International, Barty continued her impressive form by defeating Marija Mirkovic (Hillside, Vic) and will be full of confidence heading into her quarterfinal match against No.7 seed Rika Fujiwara (JPN) on Friday.

Five seeds bowed out in a day of upsets at Sydney Olympic Park, including No.3 seed and local talent Olivia Rogowska (St. Kilda, Vic). The Commonwealth Games silver medallist was in contention against Gail Brodsky (USA) before losing in three sets, 7-6(1) 4-6 6-1.

No.2 seed Katie O’Brien (GBR) was the biggest casualty of the day, succumbing to Yurika Sema (JPN) in straight sets.

In other results, top seed Kumiko Iijima (JPN) produced a commanding display against Alison Bai (Bruce, ACT) while Shannon Golds (Carrara, Qld) and wildcard Daniella Dominikovic (Blakehurst, NSW) both progressed after defeating seeded players in the second round.
