Burnie, 3 February 2011 | tennis.com.au

Bernard Tomic’s defense of his Burnie Challenger title continued with a solid win over Brisbane International quarterfinalist Matt Ebden.

Despite rain again affecting play, the skies cleared to allow most matches to go ahead – good news for Tomic who held off Ebden in straight sets, 6-3 7-5. The win sets up an intriguing quarterfinal match with fellow Gold Coaster Ben Mitchell.

The 18-year-old Mitchell defeated Canada’s Erik Chvojka 3-6 6-1 6-4 to set up the marquee clash that will take centre stage at 6:30 pm on Thursday evening.

In other matches, Chris Guccione’s return from injury is gathering pace after the big-serving Victorian ousted sixth seed Yuichi Sugita of Japan. Guccione’s next challenge is second-seeded Paolo Lorenzi of Italy.

Australian fifth seed Olivia Rogowska and Karolina Wlodarczak are the remaining Australians in the women’s draw after Isabella Holland, Tammi Patterson, Jess Moore and Sophie Letcher all bid farewell in the second round.

Play continues on Thursday from 10 am, with feature twilight matches to begin on centre court at 6:30 pm, with the Mitchell versus Tomic quarterfinal up first, followed by a second-round doubles match featuring Ebden and Sam Groth.
Live streaming of twilight matches will be available on www.burnieinternational.com.au or follow the live scores on tennis.com.au.
