Tennis Victoria in partnership with the Department of Sport and Recreation, supports Regional Academy of Sport network throughout country Victoria. Tennis Victoria provides resources and works closely with the Regional Academy network to deliver tennis programs that complement each athletes existing weekly program with their private coach in their local environment.

The Academy tennis programs play an important role within the junior player development pathway for aspiring athletes beyond local training environment.

There are 6 Regional Academies of Sport in Victoria. They are BARWON, Bendigo, Gippsland, Southwest Sunraysia and WestVic in Ballarat. Each Academy is aligned within Tennis Victoria’s 11 country regions. Each Academy tennis program has a maximum of 16 athletes all aged 11 up to 18 years of age.

Academy athlete positions are offered to athletes for a full calendar year and are invitation only (either by direct invitation or through an athlete selection trial day). The tennis programs are delivered by Tennis Victoria’s network of Regional State coaches provide a range of benefits and support including

  • 1 day training camps (approximately 1 per Term, usually on a Sunday) delivered by a Tennis Victoria regional State coach
  • Individual muscular-skeletal screening
  • Individual strength and conditioning program
  • Academy uniform and resources
  • Provision of sports science topics including nutrition and mental skills training
  • Tournament support from Regional State coaches at selected Optus Junior Tour events in school holidays
  • Opportunity to be part of Tennis Victoria’s Full Duty of Care Tours to Inter-state Nationals events (subject to event eligibility).

Tennis Victoria recognises the playing and training opportunities that the Academies provide aspiring players as they play a pivotal role within the Tennis Victoria junior player pathway.

The Barwon Development squad is also available to children who are too young or don’t quite meet the requirements of the BSA.
