Canberra tennis group Ladies Midweek Tennis are set to host their annual Charity Day on Thursday 4 May, all proceeds set to go to HOME, who provide 24-hour local support accommodation for people living with a mental illness.

HOME is the initiative of Father Day who lived in Sydney and worked on the streets with people with mental illness. The not for profit charity organisation has 19 units in Queanbeyan and was the first of its kind to open in Australia. HOME also supports the ACT and surrounding district.

The range of mental illnesses suffered by the residents is from medium to high. Each resident has their own one bedroom self contained unit, the HOME team providing vital support to residents.

Ladies Midweek Tennis player and manager of HOME, Anne Pratt, said it’s a real privilege to see people’s lives change, as they become more involved in their community.

“We work with each resident to help them believe in themselves again, to understand they can succeed, that they can function,” she said. “And we encourage them to become involved in the community.”

HOME residents pay rent and pay for their own utilities including electricity and phone. A number of residents go to TAFE, work part-time, one has begun university and others are involved in different activities in the community.

“It’s very much about enabling people who have a medical illness to take responsibility for these things,” said Pratt.

How can you help? Put your name down for the day, including social tennis and lunch, and buy some raffle tickets. All the proceeds from the day will go to HOME.
