Five Canberra players competed in the 2017 Australian Tennis Seniors Championships, including tennis seniors world No.1 Ros Balodis who took both the Women’s 55’s singles and doubles titles.

58-year-old Balodis, won the final round sinlges match in straight sets, defeating second seed Brenda Foster 6-2, 6-3.

“I had some really good tennis matches while I was in Adelaide and I really enjoyed the competition”, she said. “It was nice to see so many Canberra people playing in individuals week”.

The tennis veteran has enjoyed repeat success over the past few years, claimed victories in back-to-back International Tennis Federation (ITF) events, winning at the 2016 ITF seniors world individual championships and the 2016 ITF seniors team championship.

“I try to take each each tournament as it comes and I try to play my best tennis every time, and this time, I won out on the day.”

The 2017 championships were held over two weeks in Adelaide. More of a social competition, the 2017 Australian Seniors Teams Carnival ran from 8-13 January with over 600 participants.

This was followed by the ITF grade A tournament – the 2017 Individual Championships from 15-20 January. 335 tennis players participated in this years tournament at all age groups ranging from 35-85 years.

Each year, the delegated host Division conducts the Championships in accordance with a defined set of regulations. Canberra hosted the event in 2015.
