ACT club players ‘got to the net’ and tested out their serve volley skills, competing in the 2016 Super Serve Volley Tournament, held at the Melba Tennis Club on Sunday 26 June 2016.

16 players heated up the courts with high quality serve volley point play in a tie breaker round robin format.

It was a final replay from 2014 between brothers Nelson and Christian Parker. Highly entertaining, the match went to the best of three super tiebreakers. One set all, it was anyone’s game, with each brother trading serve and volley blows. The final was played in great spirits, with Christian winning the title, denying his brother two final wins in a row.

The finalists were pushed in the semi finals by Tristan Adrian and Daniel Green, who both performed very well in the tournament.

Super Serve Volley is an exciting tennis format that challenges players to get to the net and put their serve volley skills to the test. The major rule difference is players must serve and volley on each serve or they automatically loose the point. Combining this with super tie breakers, it creates faced paced matches.

All players thoroughly enjoyed the format and challenge, and said they can’t wait for next year.

Now in its fifth year, the Super Serve Volley Tournament was inspired by watching Pat Rafter live in the 2001 Wimbledon final. Rafter narrowly lost to Goran Ivanisevic in one of the most exciting and vocal Wimbledon finals of all time. Goran was the last true serve volleyer to win Wimbledon.

Tournament organisers would like to thank Melba Tennis Club and Own Peemoeller from On The Line Tennis, for their support in making this tournament possible.

The aim for 2017 is to have more tournaments running on the eve of Wimbledon, to keep the serve volley dream alive.
