Australia has secured its place in the knockout stage of the World Junior Tennis Asia/Oceania final qualifying event after defeating Indonesia and the Philippines.

The WJT Asia/Oceania final qualifying competition began earlier this week in Nonthaburi, Thailand. The Australian World Junior girls’ team consisting of Olivia Gadecki, Natasha Russell and Canberra’s Annerly Populs, began their Asia/Oceania final qualifying campaign with an impressive victory.

The girls defeated the Philippines 3-0 in their first pool match with a straight sets win by Russell and Gadecki, before Gadecki combined with Poulos in the doubles to make it a perfect 3-0.

In their second pool match, the girls defeated Indonesia 2-1.  Gadecki levelled the tie at 1-1 after Poulos lost her singles rubber in three sets. In the doubles rubber, Gadecki partnered with Russell to beat the Indonesian pairing 6-0 6-3. The girls now move into second place in their group behind China and will face China in their final round robin match later today.

With already two victories, the Australian team has already secured a place in the eight-nation elimination stage. The top four nations will advance to the August World Finals.
