The Canberra Velocity women have defeated the Western Sydney Warriors 5-1 today in Sydney to claim top spot in North Pool B. After losing to the Warriors 4-2 last week, the Velocity team were in top form, winning 4 of the 6 matches in straight sets. The Velocity men were unable to repeat last week’s victory over the Warriors, losing today’s match 5-1 and ending their finals hopes.

Alison Bai put Velocity out to an early lead with a 4-1, 4-3 victory over Alexandra Bozovic. Natalie Barbir then levelled the scores with a tight victory over Tyra Calderwood with all three sets going to a tiebreak. Ashley Keir defeated Rebecca Jones, while 12 year old Annerly Poulos notched up another impressive win against Lucie Kriegsmannova. In the doubles Alexandra Nancarrow and Bai defeated Bozovic and Jones, while Keir and Calderwood accounted for Kriegsmannova and Jess Engels.

The victory claimed top spot on the North Pool B ladder, and will see Velocity face the second place team in Pool A, which is still to be determined with matches taking place in Queensland later today.

With the Western Sydney Warriors and Canberra Velocity men sitting in 2nd and 3rd spot going into today’s match, a finals berth was on the line. Both teams were without number one players in Jake Eames (Velocity) and Jake Delaney (Warriors) for today’s match.

James Frawley got Velocity out to a 1-0 lead, with a straight sets victory over David Barclay. Max Purcell then hit back for the Warriors, defeating Daniel Guccione in 3 sets. Cameron Smith then defeated Troy Lockwood, while, Blade Fong beat Alex Babanine in 3 sets to put the Warriors up 3-1. The Warriors then won both doubles to take the tie 5-1, clinching the last finals spot and ending the Velocity men’s 2015-16 campaign.

The Velocity women will travel to Queensland on Friday to play in the North Conference semi finals at 6pm at the Sunshine Coast Regional Tennis Centre.
