Canberra Velocity will return to the courts in Sydney tomorrow in a bid to secure a spot in the North Conference finals of the Asia-Pacific Tennis League (ATL). Both Velocity men and women are currently sitting in second place in North Pool B and will play three matches over the weekend. The top two teams will then progress to the North Conference finals to take on the top two teams in North Pool B.
Jake Eames, Daniel Guccione, Alexander Babanine, James Frawley, and Dimitri Morogiannis are all expected to be available on the weekend, while Alison Bai, Ashley Keir, Tyra Calderwood, Kaitlin Staines, and Annerly Poulos will return for the women. World number 465, Alexandra Nancarrow, who has been battling a hand injury the past few weeks, is hoping to be fit to line up for a doubles match over the weekend, which is sure to further strengthen the women’s team.
On Friday the men and women will face the Sydney Saints. The Velocity men previously defeated the Saints 4 rubbers to 2. Last time they met, the Saints were led by world number 296 Matthew Barton, with their team list also boasting world number 154 Jordan Thompson who was unavailable last weekend. The women only narrowly defeated the Saints in their last encounter, with rubbers locked at 3-3, Velocity won on sets. However Velocity were without number 1 player, Alison Bai last time the teams played.
Saturday will see a top of the table clash between the Velocity men and the Sunshine Coast Breakers. The Breakers defeated Velocity 4-2 in their previous encounter. The Breakers were without world number 635, Dayne Kelly last weekend against Velocity, with Kelly fresh off winning the futures event in Wollongong. The Velocity women dominated the Breakers last time they met, with a 5-1 victory.
The teams will face the Western Sydney Warriors on Sunday. The Velocity men previously defeated the Warriors 4-2. The match is sure to be crucial in the final placings for the pool with the Warriors currently sitting in 3rd place. The Warriors currently sit on the top of the Women’s table, and Velocity will be looking to reverse last week’s 4-2 loss. Velocity had its chances in the previous tie against the Warriors, with the scores locked at 2-2 after singles, both doubles pairings let opportunities slip in their first sets to both lose tight matches.
